Tour of Key Industries

August 4th, 10:00 am

Come enjoy a tour of Key Industries with treats from the kitchen! Coffee/Tea and home made baked goods.

History of Key Industries
In December 1971, after many meetings between representatives of the Saint John and Lancaster Kiwanis Clubs, an historic decision was made to direct the Clubs' efforts to the building of a facility for the training of adults with physical and mental disabilities.
In March of 1972 the two Clubs set up a new corporate body, the Saint John Center for Services to the Handicapped, Inc., with Directors from each of the Clubs, plus others to assist as resource people. Visits were made to similar facilities in Montreal, Toronto and Charlottetown. A suitable location was found and-on March 23, 1973-the sod turning ceremony took place. The building was officially opened by His Worship the Mayor of Saint John Robert Lockhart, in February of 1974. In recognition of Kiwanis participation the street on which the Centre is located was named Kiwanis Ct. and the facility was called the Kiwanis Vocational Training Centre.
The story of the successful establishment of this new facility would not be complete without a tribute to the tremendous leadership of Saint John Kiwanian, Phil Emmerson, past Club President and Past Lietutenant-Governor. Above all else, Kiwanian Phil's infectious enthusiasm, skilful negotiation, and driving energy inspired a responsive group from both clubs to solve the problems, overcome the obstacles and see the planning through to a successful conclusion.
Since 1974, under the guidance of the Board of Directors, the centre has grown steadily. In January 1976 the name "Key Industries" was adopted as a trade name underlining the business orientation, as well as the social service aspects, of the organization.
The Saint John and Lancaster Kiwanis also wanted a centre that would serve as a safe place of valued activities and growth for individuals with intellectual disabilities. From its inception, Family and Community Services has been an integral part of our mission and they continue to support our programming. Service organizations and our loyal customers allow us to expand and continue the level of programming that we now provide.
Over 100 Adults attend our various Adult Developmental Activities Programs and Training (ADAPT) as we strive to increase independence, self-esteem and personal development. An idea that blossomed into a reality now provides daily valued activities, life-skills, work related training and education to adults with intellectual disabilities.
Profits from our promotional product company allow us to grow, enabling us to expand our training programs. At present Key Industries is made up of 15 Directors, 30 Support Staff and over 100 clients
