Museum Explorer Days are EVERY DAY in July and August! These family adventures are for the young and young in mind and heart. Join us for a day full of themed activities including art instruction, experiments, educational crafts and hands-on discovery tours. Have a BLAST at the New Brunswick Museum.  Extreme (!) Canada's Waterscapes — Yours to Enjoy, Explore and Protect

June 1 – September 6, 2010

Explore some of Canada’s beautiful waterscapes in this fun, new exhibition. Discover the amazing diversity of life that depends on our aquatic ecosystems. You can follow an imaginary Whooping Crane’s ‘diary’, listen to frog calls, and even create your own ocean sounds! From the Great Lakes to our seashores, we are a nation connected by water. Visit Canada’s Waterscapes and find out how you can help protect our most precious resource. Produced by the Canadian Museum of Nature in partnership with Parks Canada, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), RBC and the Canadian Water Network, with support from Canadian Geographic.

 

My Impressions of China

THIRD SPACE GALLERY AT THE NBM - As part of the Passages + Prototypes exhibition series, Third Space Gallery is partnering with the NBM to present a series of sculptural and multimedia installations.  The series is supported by financial assistance from The Canada Council for the Arts and the Province of New Brunswick.

Nautical Monuments

July 9 to August 22, 2010

The transformative process of industrial abandonment and the unpredictable manifestations of renaissance are at the heart of Colin Lyon’s work. He will present zinc sculptures and prints created from his residency in Saint John. Colin Lyons also received assistance from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and logistical support from Imago printmaking studios in Moncton. Pay what you can admission Sundays from 3 to 5 pm. Elements of this exhibit will also be displayed in Third Space’s ATM window space on 40 Charlotte Street. Caillou and the Innu

June 10 – October 3, 2010

Children are invited to follow Caillou, the popular character created by Éditions Chouette, in his adventures through the pages of a giant interactive book read to them in English, French or Innu. A play area with a replica of an Innu camp, including an Innu tent, costumes, games, and authentic objects will carry children off to a fascinating world full of Innu traditions. Produced by the Montréal Biodôme in collaboration with Éditions Chouette, the Ekuanitshit Innu community, the Institut Culturel et Éducatif Montagnais (ICEM), and Friends of the Montréal Biodôme (SABM); with the support of Heritage Canada.

Saint John artists and performers will take centre stage in 2010 to celebrate the city’s 225th anniversary as Canada’s original city.

Through 2010 Saint John 225: The Original City/La ville originale will present 10 programs designed to celebrate and highlight the city’s arts, culture and history. Saint John was incorporated on May 18, 1785.

“This is a chance for Saint John to show off its best assets,” says His Worship Mayor Ivan Court. “From our artists and musicians to the diverse cultures of our beautiful city, citizens and visitors alike will have a chance to take in an original event.”

The City of Saint John is a 2010 Cultural Capital of Canada, a designation awarded by the federal Department of Canadian Heritage, which provides up to $750,000 in funding for the support of the city's arts and culture.

Saint John Common Council has provided $225,000 in funding towards Saint John 225.

“Our designation as a Cultural Capital of Canada for 2010 is just one more indication of the cultural renaissance taking place in our city,” said Peter Buckland, Saint John 225 committee chair. “Saint John is a vibrant community, a great place to live and a great place to visit, and we are about to share this with the rest of our country.”

The Saint John 225 program of events features:

· A Summer of Festivals - Beginning May 18 and stretching through September, Saint John will host four major events:

o Official anniversary celebrations on Tuesday May 18;

o Celebration 225 is a day-long party at Rockwood Park onJuly3rd,2010. We're planning events for the whole family, including live cultural performances, children's activities and fireworks.

o Reunion 2010 will fill Saint John with music in late summer. Inspired by the Old Home Week celebrations that occur throughout the Maritimes, Reunion 2010 is an opportunity for people to reconnect with their Saint John roots.

o In September 2010 Saint John will host a First Nations Festival to celebrate the art, culture and history of the Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) and the Mi'kmaq, First Nations of the Maritimes.

· Where’s Art: Art in the Unexpected – Saint John get ready to meet Art. Saint John 225’s mascot is a fun-loving cultural explorer who will be popping up around the city throughout 2010 – and wherever Art is, entertainment and creativity are sure to follow. Art will promote local arts, culture and heritage performances and creations.

· City Stories: Our People’s Historyan online living heritage project. Throughout 2010 people will be invited to submit their stories, memories and insight of the Saint John region to the City Stories website, which will guide visitors through the history of Saint John, as told by the people who know it best.

· Passage in Time: Art in the Public Space - Saint John 225 will commission one signature piece of public art to reflect and celebrate the many people who have lived  at the confluence of the St. John River and the Bay of Fundy. The theme of the piece is "The Meeting Place" and the call for proposals, to be issued in early 2010, will invite visual artists to submit proposals that are inspired and/or reflect the area's traditional role as a place where people and cultures have gathered.
